White’s tree frog might just be the most underrated pet in existence. I have three of these frogs, and despite their almost identical appearance, I can tell them apart based on their distinct behaviors and personalities. These creatures have their own zones in their habitat, unique behaviors, and even individual personalities. Among pet amphibians, they are some of the most handleable and easy to care for, making them fantastic companions. Plus, they produce incredible sounds, although sometimes at the most inconvenient times.

Funky Features and Amazing Abilities

These chunky frogs almost resemble plush toys, with their large faces, rolling eyebrow ridges, and huge eyes. Their creamy white stomachs and vibrant blue-green skin give them a striking appearance. However, when upset, they can turn into the typical brown toad color.

Despite their appearance, White’s tree frogs are surprisingly athletic. They throw themselves around their tank, climbing plants and water. While not as skilled as lizards, they can scale glass in an awkward yet effective manner.

Beautiful, Low-Maintenance Habitats

Setting up a bioactive tank for White’s tree frogs can create a stunning display in any room. A bioactive tank includes layers of drainage, hidden dividers, deep soil substrate covered with moss, and thick plantings of Monstera, pothos, ferns, and grasses. The result is an artistic arrangement that even non-pet enthusiasts can appreciate.

Simple Feeding Routine

Feeding White’s tree frogs is straightforward. They eat a variety of bugs that fit into their mouths, which can be easily obtained from local pet stores or online. These frogs eagerly consume anything living in their tank, including insects. Their enthusiastic feeding behavior, leaping onto their dinner with mouths wide open, is both amusing and impressive.

Easy to Handle

White’s tree frogs are naturally calm and relaxed. While reptiles and amphibians don’t tame down in the same way mammals do, they can become accustomed to handling. These frogs tend to handle human attention well, making them more tolerant of short handling sessions.

Long Lifespan

If cared for properly, White’s tree frogs can live up to 20 years, offering significant value for their cost. This extended lifespan provides companionship and joy for years to come.

The White’s Tree Frogs Song

Male White’s tree frogs can produce a remarkable croaking sound that is quite distinct. Unlike the typical pond frog ribbit, their croak is a beautiful bellow. However, due to the potential for noisy nights, it’s advisable not to keep their tank in your bedroom.

Relaxing to Watch

These times are stressful for everyone, and having a pet that can help you unwind is truly valuable. Watching White’s tree frogs in their habitat, observing their gentle movements and explorations, can be a calming and enjoyable experience.

Why White’s Tree Frogs Make Great Pets

While getting a pet requires thorough research and preparation, White’s tree frogs offer a relaxed and enjoyable companionship experience. Their unique appearance, easy care requirements, and tranquil demeanor make them a wonderful addition to any household. As we all navigate these challenging times, having a companion that brings comfort and joy can be incredibly rewarding.

So, if you’re considering a new pet and have the means to provide proper care, White’s tree frogs are definitely worth considering as your indoor buddies.
